The last Sunday

I saw you,

you were so brilliant with light

I could not see your face.

You’d grown taller than me

and were clumsy in your new height

choosing to wear your denim jacket indoors.

Loving your new adolescence, excited by the prospect

of years of growth ahead:

Would you care for me in my old age?

Did I have the right to expect that,

being only an aunt?

Instead I should have held you until you broke away

and even as you broke away.

As it is I cannot remember if I

even touched you as you left

that last Sunday.

You were so brilliant with light

I could not see your face.

(from EXPERIMENTAL LOVE, 1993)
